Nutrition Basics
Understanding the fundamentals of nutrition: macronutrients, micronutrients, and how to build a balanced diet. On codnexy.xyz.
What Is Nutrition?
Nutrition is the science of how the body uses nutrients from food to sustain life and health. The foods we eat provide the building blocks for every cell, tissue, and organ in our bodies. Good nutrition means getting the right balance of macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, fat), micronutrients (vitamins and minerals), and water in the right amounts for your individual needs.
Macronutrients vs. Micronutrients
Macronutrients are nutrients your body needs in large amounts: protein (4 calories per gram), carbohydrates (4 calories per gram), and fat (9 calories per gram). They provide energy and the raw materials for growth and repair. Micronutrients are needed in smaller amounts but are equally critical: vitamins and minerals support immune function, energy production, bone health, and hundreds of other processes.
Building a Balanced Plate
A simple guide for a balanced meal: fill half your plate with vegetables and fruits, a quarter with lean protein (chicken, fish, tofu, beans), and a quarter with whole grains or starchy vegetables. Add a small amount of healthy fat (olive oil, avocado, nuts). This approach naturally provides appropriate calories, adequate protein, fiber, and micronutrients without requiring strict counting.
Key Points
- ✓Macronutrients provide energy: protein (4 kcal/g), carbs (4 kcal/g), fat (9 kcal/g)
- ✓Micronutrients (vitamins & minerals) are needed in small amounts but are essential
- ✓A balanced plate: 1/2 vegetables & fruit, 1/4 protein, 1/4 whole grains
- ✓Hydration is a critical part of nutrition—aim for 2-3 litres of water daily
- ✓Whole foods are superior to processed foods for nutrient density
